Why do some people not care, at all, about automobiles?

Hello, fellow Opponauts. Welcome to Letters to Myself, your favorite new series wherein nobody writes letters to me; I ask and answer my own idiotic questions?

How does it work? Simple. Sir Douglas DeMuro seeds through his email, finds a question, answers it, posts this all into Jalopnik, and I guffaw. Then some random guy named Marvin irreverently answers it once again for no good reason. Finally, I throw this all away, and create and answer my own question.

Do you want to participate? Well, you can either recommend this post, or try to get the head honchos at Mother Jelopnic™ to share this. There’s no email to send stuff to, the advantage of the approach being that no one can set up scientific journal accounts in your name, or sign up for burner accounts for seedier sites and the like.

Today’s question that I’ve presented is: why do some people not care, at all, about automobiles?

I understand not liking them, for we each have our own interests, or there are reasons detracting from the subject. For example, the most basic reason for viewing automobiles in spite is that “they run on fossil fuels, and those are soooo bad—now I have to go look at dank meme$ and buy a Starbucks and post it on Snapchat”. Or, “I almost got run over by a car; now I’m traumatized forever!” Finally, there’s that YouTube commenter that says “oh pshhhht—my unicycle will destroy your maxima everytiem (Doug DeMuro reference)“.

What I don’t get is why people are so ignorant to not even know the most basic car makes and models. For example “he drives a blue car.” What type of car??? I care, darn it! Or, “I my car got rear ended, but I can’t tell which brand it is. Do I drive a Toyota or Infiniti?” How can one not tell? This is what irritates me about this topic.

So, I’ve come to the point in which I’ve figured: people don’t care for cars for the same reason that I don’t care for “dank meme$” or Snapchat. We, as a community, I presume, spend too much time paying attention to ours and others’ cars. Those people care too much on their social media and coffee.

There are also those YouTube commenters who find that their “unicycle will destroy your maxima everytiem”.

EDIT: Okay, it seems that people mistook the whole article for “showing an interest” than ignorance (ignorance about cars, e.g. not knowing brand was what I meant). All thanks to my bad choice of wording.

Not caring about cars I can understand, but not knowing what you drive is absolutely inexcusable.

That is part of the ignorance—right there

Do you know where your clothes are from? Or do you just throw on whatever when you walk out the door in the morning? If yes to the second one, congratulations, that’s how people feel about cars.

I think the same thing until someone asks me “did you watch the (football team) game?” I barely know any of the rules of football, I probably couldn’t name more than 2 active players, and I don’t hear from most of my friends on Sunday because they know that I would rather go to the dentist than sit through 5 minutes of a football game. However I’m glad football exists and that it has such a nutso religious following because Sunday afternoons during football season are amazing! You can go to the store, go for a drive etc... everyone else is watching football!

I know nothing about fridges, but I know what brand my family has. Same could be said for cars. I just think some people aren’t observant.

“why do some people not care, at all, about automobiles?”

I can think of a few reasons:

-Their interests lie elsewhere

-they don’t own a car, don’t need to own a car and don’t want to own a car

-They view it as an appliance/tool to serve a purpose... just like any other tool or applicance... hence the popularity of cars like the Corolla and Camry.

-They’re hard-core environmentalists.

-They’re hard-core cyclists

Same way I couldn’t tell you a damn thing about my dishwasher, including who made it. For some people, a dishwasher and a car are the exact same thing. Plenty of people don’t know what architectural style their house is either.

I realized long ago that for most people, cars are like toasters.

So long as they toast their bread, they’re happy.

Such people believe that caring deeply about cars is akin to caring deeply about toasters. As silly as joining an online toaster forum, or disucssing the various types of toasters - 4 slice vs 2 slice???

(apologies to, um, any toaster aficionados who may be out there)

You can ask this question about anything you’re enthusiastic about that other people aren’t. Why don’t I care about gospel music? Why don’t I care about sewing machines? Why don’t I care about remote control quadracoptors? Why do I care about cars?

Because I don’t like any of those things, but I do like cars.

I kinda get it I guess. For example, I dont care at all, in the least bit about sports. Any of them. Its not that Im fat and lazy, Im actually in good shape.

But for me, I just find them really boring. People ask me all the time, “Did you see the game last night?” or “Whos your team this year?” Most of the time I dont know what sport is in season.

But Im not a dick about it, I just say its not my thing, or I havent been keeping up and they usually let it go...Usually.

Haha, thats me! I actually checked to see what brand my shoes are!

I hate clothes shopping too, I go to an outlet mall once in a while and stock up on jeans, shorts, shirts, etc amd try not to spend a fortune.

Some guys I know have dozens of shoes, and they probably wear several hundred dollars worth of clothes on any given day.

A to B

For many, a car is just another appliance that serves a purpose to make life a little more convenient, the same way a fridge, dishwasher or smartphone does. They may even be brand aware and pick up something OPPOworthy, but not be an enthusiast at all. It could be for the same reason someone buys a top of the line grill or watch; they do so simply because it’s “the best”.

The enthusiast market, frankly, is a minority and most cars are sold for reasons like the ones stated. The ideas are enthusiast driven, but often the folks driving these gems off of the lots are not.

People who get into clothing brands or cooking ware could ask me the same question and find me with a dumbfounded look on my face. Perhaps I bought the best I knew that served that purpose, nothing more. It’s the same dumb look I get from folks who swear by Miller Light and Budweiser.

We look at cars as more than these basic A to B appliances. To us they are an expression, a rolling signature, a mechanical effigy of who we are as an individual. It matters. It means something.

Some just don’t feel that way and if you think about it, there’s something out there that you feel the same way about and some enthusiast of said object can’t understand WTF is wrong with people like you.

I used to always run errands during Seahawks games. I am a fan, but I got shit to do. If need be I can put on the radio between stops. Also getting your haircut during an NFL game is wonderful. Every place is empty so there is no wait.

I used to drive an Austin-Healey 100, a unique car these days. I know it sounds egotistical, but as a car guy I couldn’t understand how anybody over the age of three could walk by and not at least have some idle curiosity about this unique thing. Even though I don’t care about clothes if I saw a man or women walking down the street in 1950s garb I would look.

Kinja'd!!!

Not the car I owned but same color/condition.
